International Mother Earth Day — education for sustainable development starts with understanding our planet from space

📅 April 22 · International Awareness Day

Celebrate Mother Earth Day Through Education for Sustainable Development

International Mother Earth Day is a call to action for classrooms everywhere. Through education for sustainable development, students explore the relationship between people and the planet, investigate environmental challenges in their communities, and design solutions through project based learning. This is where global citizenship education meets real-world impact.

International Mother Earth Day highlights the urgent need to protect our ecosystems and take climate action aligned with SDG 13 and the broader 2030 Agenda. By connecting classrooms around the world, students discover that environmental challenges are both local and global — and that collaboration is the key to finding solutions.

A powerful opportunity for teaching the SDGs through hands-on experiences that connect the classroom to the world. This International Mother Earth Day, through education for sustainable development, students don’t just learn about environmental problems — they become part of the solution in a global classroom.

Green School Dreamers: Building Tomorrow’s Eco-Spaces

What would your dream eco-school look like? In this project based learning experience, students from different countries collaborate to design 3D models of sustainable schools using recycled materials. Through playful Design Thinking activities, they imagine, prototype, and present innovative solutions — turning education for sustainable development into something students can build with their own hands. A perfect example of a global classroom in action.

What is this project about

In this collaborative project, students become eco-architects. They research environmental challenges in their schools, share ideas with partner classrooms around the world, and use Design Thinking to create 3D models of dream eco-friendly schools. The project builds spatial thinking, environmental awareness, and creative problem-solving — all while connecting classrooms for shared learning.

EarthSolvers: Local Action, Global Change

What if students could solve a real environmental problem in their community — and share their solution with classrooms worldwide? In this project based learning experience, students use the full Design Thinking process to identify local environmental challenges, develop prototypes, and present solutions in a live cross-cultural video call. This is education for sustainable development meets global citizenship education — and a powerful way of teaching the SDGs through action.

What is this project about

In this collaborative project, students become EarthSolvers. They identify a common environmental challenge in their schools or communities and work with international partner classes through the Design Thinking process — Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test — to develop and share solutions. Aligned with International Mother Earth Day and SDG 13: Climate Action, the project culminates in a video call where classes present prototypes and proposed solutions to each other.

Global citizenship education — students connecting with international peers to solve environmental challenges together

Skills students will develop

Problem Solving

Applying the full Design Thinking cycle to move from problem identification to actionable prototypes.

Leadership

Taking initiative to guide teams through ideation and prototyping, and leading the final presentation.

Collaboration

Using digital tools to work effectively with international peers — connecting classrooms across borders for shared environmental impact.
